6 Tips to Save Yourself from Burnout

Have you put off planning a summer vacation because of the never-ending demands of your job? Have you been longing for a day to do nothing more strenuous than flirt with the ocean waves or stroll along the shore? When was the last time you and your special someone enjoyed some nice, relaxing quality time?

If you’re feeling burned out, you are not alone. According to a recent report, burnout in the workplace is on the rise. Fortunately, you won’t have to do anything as drastic as quitting your job to reclaim a sense of wellbeing and control.

“It’s become increasingly essential to our health that we actively schedule time away from work,” say the experts at the Well Being Trust, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to advancing mental, social and spiritual health. “Taking personal time to recharge has myriad benefits to your mental health.”

It All Adds Up

New data from Future Forum Pulse reveals that more and more people around the world are suffering from burnout. Not surprisingly, the most dramatic increases were seen right here in the U.S. The survey also shows that some folks are more likely to be in danger of burning out than others. For example, the researchers found that:

  • Female employees displayed 32 percent more burnout than their male counterparts.

  • Younger workers, specifically those in the 18 to 29 year-old age bracket, were more likely to burn out than those over the age of 30 (49 percent vs. 38 percent).

But no one has a monopoly on burnout, which is defined by the health experts at the Mayo Clinic as “a special type of work-related stress — a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity.”

6 Tips to Save Yourself from Burnout

“Whether you recognize the warning signs of impending burnout or you’re already past the breaking point, trying to push through the exhaustion and continuing as you have been will only cause further emotional and physical damage,” say the experts at HelpGuide.org, an independent, not-for-profit mental health resource. “Now is the time to pause and change direction by learning how you can help yourself overcome burnout and feel healthy and positive again.”

When it comes to dealing with burnout, they recommend:

  1. Spending time with positive people: “Hanging out with negative-minded people who do nothing but complain will only drag down your mood and outlook. If you have to work with a negative person, try to limit the amount of time you spend together.”

  1. Establishing boundaries: “Don’t overextend yourself. Learn how to say ‘no’ to requests on your time.”

  1. Cutting back on your screen time: “Take a daily break from technology. Set a time each day when you completely disconnect. Put away your laptop, turn off your phone, and stop checking email or social media.”

  1. Indulging your creativity: “Creativity is a powerful antidote to burnout. Try something new, start a fun project, or resume a favorite hobby. Choose activities that have nothing to do with work or whatever is causing your stress.”

  1. Exercising: “Even though it may be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re burned out, exercise is a powerful antidote to stress and burnout. It’s also something you can do right now to boost your mood. Aim to exercise for 30 minutes or more per day or break that up into short, 10-minute bursts of activity. A 10-minute walk can improve your mood for two hours.”

  1. Punching out! “Try to take a complete break from work. Go on vacation, use up your sick days, ask for a temporary leave-of-absence, anything to remove yourself from the situation. Use the time away to recharge your batteries.”

  • This is where we come in! Can you think of a better place to recharge and renew than an iconic oceanfront resort located directly on the famous Fort Lauderdale Beach and just minutes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades, and downtown Las Olas Boulevard?
